Distinguished and Famous people from Shipwreck Coast

🛟 Tom Pearce and Eva Carmichael

Teenagers Tom Pearce and Eva Carmichael became famous through a catastrophe on the coast near Port Campbell. When the Loch Ard struck Mutton Bird Island in June 1878, apprentice seaman Pearce reached the beach, then swam out to help Carmichael ashore. They were the only survivors. Their story attracted photographers and an eager public, and Pearce received the Royal Humane Society of Victoria's first gold medal. Popular hopes that the pair would marry produced a romantic sequel that never happened: Eva returned to Ireland, while Tom continued a seafaring career. The rescue itself needs no invented romance to explain why their names remain attached to Loch Ard Gorge.

🧵 Fletcher Jones

Fletcher Jones began selling textiles in Warrnambool in 1924 and developed a clothing business whose name appeared in wardrobes across Australia. Expansion led to a purpose-built factory in the late 1940s, with an unusually significant role for employees: staff could become part-owners and share in the company's profits. The enterprise became a major local employer, while its gardens functioned as a public place and hosted staff and family celebrations. The factory's Silver Ball water tower became a town landmark. His association with Warrnambool is therefore an industrial and community story, extending from the cutting room to employee ownership and the familiar gardens outside.
